Standing at the Mirador del Tabonal Negro, you’re greeted by the crisp scent of volcanic rock and the faint aroma of pine trees. The air is cool, and the sound of the wind rustling through the shrubs fills your ears. To your left, the imposing silhouette of Mount Teide looms, its peak often kissed by clouds. As you take a deep breath, the earthy notes of the landscape invigorate you, signaling the adventure ahead.
As you start your walk, the terrain shifts beneath your feet. You’ll navigate a well-marked path that meanders through rugged volcanic terrain. The ground is uneven with patches of coarse black lava rock, so you’ll need to watch your step. The atmosphere gradually changes as you descend into a slightly denser area of scrub and low vegetation, with the occasional burst of color from wildflowers. The sounds of nature surround you - birds chirping and the distant rustle of wildlife. The sunlight filters through the trees, casting playful shadows on the path.
Be mindful of the uneven cobbles along the trail, as they can make footing tricky, especially if you’re not wearing sturdy shoes. The walk is relatively straightforward, but the elevation changes might leave you a bit breathless. If you’re there in the afternoon, be aware that the sun can be intense, so keep an eye on your water supply. Also, it's a good idea to check the weather before you go; conditions can change rapidly in the mountains.
Wear comfortable hiking shoes and bring plenty of water to stay hydrated. Depending on the season, you might want to pack a light jacket, as temperatures can drop, especially in the evening. If you're walking during the summer months, sunscreen and a hat are essential to protect against the sun. Starting early in the morning or late in the afternoon can offer a cooler experience and a chance to see the landscape in different light.
The best moment on this walk is when you finally reach the viewpoint at Pico Viejo, especially during the golden hour just before sunset. The sunlight bathes the landscape in warm hues, and the distant views of Mount Teide become almost ethereal. The air is still, and you can feel the day's warmth slowly fading as the colors of the sky transition to deep oranges and purples, leaving you with a sense of peace and wonder.
