As I start at the Tomb of Adham Khan, the air is thick with the scent of freshly cut grass from the nearby gardens. The tomb's red sandstone glows warmly under the sun, while birds chirp among the trees, their calls mingling with the distant hum of traffic. You can feel a sense of ancient stories lingering in the air, as if the very stones are whispering their secrets to anyone who cares to listen.
Leaving the tomb, the path takes me along the quiet lanes of Mehrauli, where the terrain shifts slightly uphill. The buildings become sparser, revealing more greenery as I stroll past the occasional vendor selling local snacks. A left turn onto Aurobindo Marg brings with it a rush of sounds - honking cars and the chatter of pedestrians, blending into a lively urban soundtrack. As I approach the end of the route, the landscape transforms again, with the magnificent Tomb of Balban coming into view, framed by the sprawling gardens that seem to stretch endlessly.
While walking, be cautious of uneven cobblestones that can be tricky underfoot, especially as you near Balban's tomb. The area can get busy with traffic, particularly during rush hour, so keep an eye out for vehicles. It’s wise to keep your belongings secure, as pickpockets can sometimes be a concern in crowded spots. Also, be aware that some places may have restricted opening hours, so check ahead if you’re hoping to explore the tombs inside.
For this walk, wear comfortable shoes that can handle the uneven terrain, and don’t forget to bring water, especially on warmer days. If it's the rainy season, an umbrella could come in handy, while a hat will help shield you from the sun in the hotter months. Mid-morning or late afternoon is ideal for this route, as the light softens and the temperatures are more pleasant.
The best moment comes as I reach the Tomb of Balban just before sunset. The sun casts a golden hue across the tomb's majestic structure, illuminating its intricate carvings. The air cools slightly, and the sounds of the city fade into a gentle hum, leaving a sense of peace as I take in the beauty of the moment, the sweet scent of blooming flowers swirling around me.
