As I stand at the entrance to the Gyeongju Historic Areas, the air is thick with the scent of pine from the nearby trees, mingling with the faint aroma of street food wafting from a vendor’s cart. The sound of laughter and chatter fills the air, punctuated by the distant ringing of temple bells. The sun filters through the leaves, casting dappled shadows on the ground, inviting me to begin my walk toward the Stone Seated Buddha in Yongjangsagok Valley.
Setting off down the winding path, I first stroll along the serene streets of Hwangnam-dong, where traditional hanoks line the route. The terrain shifts slightly, with gentle slopes leading me toward the more rugged paths that lie ahead. As I continue, I pass through the historical Gyeongju National Museum with its impressive collection of relics. The sounds of nature become more pronounced, with birds chirping and leaves rustling in the breeze. The light shifts too, as I move from shaded areas into bright patches illuminated by the midday sun.
Be mindful of the uneven cobblestone paths that can be tricky underfoot, especially as you approach Namsan Mountain. Traffic can be sporadic, so keep an eye out for cyclists and cars. The area is generally safe, but it’s wise to keep your belongings secure, as pickpockets occasionally operate in busier spots. Check the opening hours for any sites you want to visit, as some may close earlier than expected.
Wear sturdy shoes for this walk, as the terrain varies from smooth pavements to rocky trails. Bring a bottle of water to stay hydrated, especially on warmer days. If you're walking in the summer, sunscreen is a must, while spring and fall can offer refreshing breezes, making for a pleasant stroll. Early morning is ideal for cooler temperatures and fewer crowds.
As I reach the Stone Seated Buddha just before sunset, the golden light spills over the valley, illuminating the ancient figure with a warm glow. The serenity of the moment is palpable, with the soft rustling of the trees and the distant sound of water flowing in the nearby stream. It’s a moment that feels like a perfect pause in time, a peaceful end to a fulfilling walk.
