As I stand outside the Holy Ghost Cathedral, the air is thick with the scent of incense mingling with the salty breeze from the nearby ocean. The cathedral’s imposing facade looms above me, its white walls gleaming under the bright Kenyan sun. I can hear the faint sound of church bells ringing in the distance, accompanied by the chatter of locals passing by. It's a lively morning, and the warmth of the day is just beginning to settle in.
As I set off, I stroll down Moi Avenue, where the city starts to awaken. The terrain shifts slightly, from the smooth pavement of the cathedral square to the more uneven sidewalk as I approach the Old Port area. The noise level rises with the sounds of vendors setting up their stalls, their voices blending with the honking of matatus weaving through traffic. The sea breeze mixes with the aroma of fresh fish and spices from nearby eateries. Continuing onto Nkrumah Road, the surroundings become more residential, with colorful homes and vibrant street art decorating the walls.
Watch your step as you navigate the cobblestone streets, especially near the port where the ground can be uneven. Be mindful of traffic, as the roads can be busy with both vehicles and pedestrians. Keep an eye on your belongings, as pickpockets can be a concern in crowded areas. If you're planning to explore the Fort Jesus Museum, check the opening hours beforehand to avoid disappointment.
Wear comfortable walking shoes, as you'll be covering about 5 kilometers. Bring a bottle of water to stay hydrated under the sun, and maybe a light jacket for when the sea breeze picks up in the afternoon. If you’re walking early in the morning or later in the afternoon, you might enjoy a cooler, more pleasant experience.
The best moment of this walk is right as the sun begins to dip towards the horizon, casting a warm glow over the city. Standing near the ACK Mombasa Memorial Cathedral, I take in the sight of the golden rays reflecting off the ocean, illuminating the vibrant colors of the buildings around me. The sound of distant waves crashing against the shore adds a soothing backdrop to this perfect end to the day.
