As I stand in front of the Kara Musa Pasha Mosque, the scent of warm spices wafts through the air, mingling with the salty breeze from the nearby sea. The intricate patterns on the mosque’s exterior catch the morning light, while the soft sounds of distant chatter and the occasional clink of a coffee cup create a relaxed atmosphere. The sun is just beginning to rise, casting a golden hue over the stonework, inviting me to explore the streets that lie ahead.
Leaving the mosque, I stroll along Arkadiou Street, where the cobblestones shift underfoot, uneven and steep in places. The street narrows, and the buildings rise higher, their colorful shutters flung open to let the morning sun in. As I continue, I pass by the lively Platanos Square, filled with the laughter of children and the aroma of freshly baked bread from a nearby bakery. The transition from the quiet mosque to the bustling square is palpable, with the sounds of locals greeting each other and the faint strumming of a guitar in the distance.
Keep an eye out for the uneven cobblestones, especially as you navigate through the narrower streets. The area can get crowded, particularly during mid-morning when tourists start to fill the cafes. Be aware of pickpockets, especially in the busier squares. If you're planning to visit the Archaeological Museum, check its opening hours, as they can vary, and sometimes it's closed for renovations or holidays.
Wear comfortable shoes for the walk, as the cobbled streets can be tricky. Bringing a water bottle is a good idea, especially if you’re out during the warmer months. Sunscreen is essential, given the limited shade along the route, and a light jacket might come in handy if you’re walking in the cooler early morning or late evening.
The best moment of this walk comes just after sunrise, as you cross the threshold into Platanos Square. The golden light filters through the trees, illuminating the locals as they sip their coffee amidst the sounds of laughter and conversation. The air is still cool, and the scent of fresh pastries wafts through the square, making you feel like you’re part of the morning ritual in Rethimno.
